🚨 Team Puffs & Cuffs is Walking 42km Overnight! 🩺👮♂️
This March, we are taking part in Up All Night, walking overnight to help provide a home away from home and services that support the well-being of WA families with sick kids.
Our team, Puffs and Cuffs, brings together two very different work worlds. As a nurse managing a busy, fast-paced GP clinic, and a police officer working a chaotic roster that constantly rotates through days, afternoons, and graveyard night shifts, we are no strangers to exhausting weeks. But walking 42 kilometers through the middle of the night is going to push our stamina to a whole new level.
Why this cause hits close to home for us:
We previously lived regional in Northam. Toward the end of our time there, I worked at a local GP clinic, which gave me a firsthand look at the reality of regional healthcare. Country medical teams do an incredible job, but there is only so much local healthcare can provide. For severe or highly specialized cases, not only do sick kids suffer, but their parents face an incredibly anxious, stressful drive of exactly 1 hour and 23 minutes straight down to Perth while entirely consumed by worry.
We know firsthand how tough that distance can be. When we lived in Northam and just wanted to come down to Perth for ordinary family events, it required days of advanced planning—stressing over which relative's house we could stay at and making sure they were okay hosting us alongside our German Shepherd.
If a planned weekend visit takes that much coordination, it highlights the immense logistical challenge regional parents face when a child is suddenly, critically ill and needs to travel right away. For families needing to travel far from home to access specialist medical care, sleepless nights are sadly just part of the deal. They don't have days to plan, coordinate pet care, or find a spare room.
By walking a night in their shoes, we want to help these families at a time when they need it most. In those overwhelming moments, having someone step in to help direct the thinking path and map out the next steps is incredibly valuable. While the house itself is a medical, pet-free environment to protect the kids, the amazing staff at Ronald McDonald House do exactly that. They take the pressure off by guiding parents through those first frantic steps—pointing them toward community resources to help coordinate emergency pet care, meal services, and sudden logistics. Once a parent is shown the way that very first time, it sets a path forward. If the child requires multiple hospital visits down the track, those overwhelming logistics start to become a manageable routine.
Ronald McDonald House takes that massive mental burden away from the parents by providing a vital home away from home right near the hospital so they can stay strong and just focus on being together during the hardest time of their lives. Having lived and worked in the regions, we know exactly how life-changing this support is.
