The Wowlers are fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Charities Western Australia, in memory of Dante
Every day, in the early hours of the morning, there are families at Ronald McDonald House who have been up all night. They are safe, comfortable and cared for so they can give their sick child all the love and support they need.
Ronald McDonald House is an essential service for thousands of families with seriously and critically ill children. One of these families was the family of Cristy’s nephew, Dante suffered from a rare cancer called Neuroblastoma-High Risk, stage 4. He was diagnosed on 13 April, 2010 at the age of 3.
Amongst other treatments, Dante endured 7 rounds of Chemo, Etoposide, Vincristine, Carbo, VP-16, and Topotecan (a much stronger Chemo). He had 4 bone marrow aspirations and many nuclear medicine scans. On 19 July, 2010, the main tumour was removed (adrenal gland). The surgeon said that Dante did really well because it only took 4 hours, with other children having spent up to 16 hrs in surgery.
After the induction phase, Dante’s parents were told that unfortunately the chemo was unsuccessful. Dante was then included in an ultra-radiation clinical trial in Cincinnati, Ohio. For this he had to remain in a special room covered in lead to prevent the radiation spreading to other rooms. There was plastic everywhere, on the floor, TV remote, telephone, etc. Nurses didn’t come in, only in emergencies, and Dante was monitored through video cameras.
When Dante returned home, he had to be isolated to minimise the risk of passing radioactivity to others. His baby sister went to live with Grandma for a while. His clothing had to be washed separately and then the washing machine was run on an empty cycle to double rinse. He had to use disposable plates and cutlery to eat and couldn’t be hugged for a while.
Dante fought for 3 years until his little body could no longer fight and he earned his wings at the short age of 6.
During all this, Dante’s family had their faith, and the support of family, friends, and the Ronald McDonald House.
